Many pro-direct instruction folks are using a recent article from BNN as evidence against inquiry-based learning, thinking classrooms, etc.

I respect these people as educators who, like me, want what's best for students.

But, let's dig into what this study actually tells us.

Kyle Webb Jamie Mitchell I too could take the easy road, have students sit in rows and not let them use their voices to learn with the traditional model. How the author sees this as a trend and can’t see it for the opportunity it lends itself to be as a learning tool for Ss. Thanks for exposing us to it!

What a treat to hear vanessa vakharia on CBC Saskatchewan on my morning commute today.
She nailed the issues with the Saskatchewan Roughriders latest marketing based on 'girl math'.
Hopefully next time will be a more positive conversation!

I've read this too and Jamie Mitchell hits the nail on the head with his response to these BTC critics.
BTC has been transformative in our classrooms and has instilled a new love of learning in students all within a subject where the norm is often to disengage and accept defeat.

For example, I’ve been using BTC for 10+ years.
It’s transformative.
I’ve seen interest in math increase, attendance improve, behaviour improve, understanding improve.
More students (including girls and BIPOC students) pursue STEM programs in post-secondary.

It’s WAY more than just math, or more what importantly, what generations of people - adults and kids alike - have been conditioned to think mathematics is or what it can surface or what it can teach us about ourselves.

I read this.
I’ll offer some responses.
But ultimately there is a group of education-adjacent people (who some might call traditional) who think students must be passive participants in school and that teachers are the ultimate controllers of knowledge.
